TCL Unveils World’s First Paper-Like Screen That is Also a Vibrant AMOLED

TCL has unveiled its first AMOLED-based NxtPaper display, marking a shift from previous generations that relied on LCD panels. The new panel aims to deliver a paper-like reading experience while maintaining the color performance expected from AMOLED technology.

Improved Eye Comfort

A key advancement in the new display is the upgraded Circular Polarizer Light technology. TCL reports that the polarization rate has increased to 90 percent, compared to 57 percent in the previous generation.

The company’s display unit, TCL CSOT, has applied nano-matrix lithography technology to reduce ambient light reflections and glare, which are major contributors to eye fatigue.

The panel automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature throughout the day to match circadian rhythms and surrounding lighting conditions. TCL states that the filter for harmful blue light has improved by 15 percent, lowering the total level to 2.9 percent.

In low-light conditions, the display can reduce its brightness to as low as 1 nit. It also includes an Adaptive Reading Experience feature that adjusts background colors for text depending on ambient light.

AMOLED Performance

Despite its focus on eye comfort, the display maintains full AMOLED capabilities. It covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and achieves a deltaE value below 1 for color accuracy.

The panel can reach a peak brightness of 3,200 nits for outdoor visibility. TCL notes that lower reflectivity reduces the need to operate at maximum brightness. The display also supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and high frame rate content.

TCL confirmed that the first devices using the NxtPaper AMOLED display will launch later this year, with a smartphone expected to debut the technology.
