Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that schools will be closed from the end of this week for two weeks, while higher education institutions will shift to online classes.
The federal government made the announcement as part of the austerity measures in response to the fuel crisis and the ongoing war in the Middle East.
The prime minister made the announcement during a televised address to the nation after chairing a meeting on austerity steps.
He said the education-related decision is part of a broader 14-point plan aimed at managing the economic strain created by the regional situation.
The federal announcement comes as provinces also move to suspend on-campus activities.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, and universities from March 10 to March 31. She said examinations will continue as scheduled, while teaching activities will shift to online classes during the closure period.
In Balochistan, the Schools Education Department has directed the temporary closure of all public and private educational institutions from March 9 to March 23, 2026, citing the Middle East conflict and the need to ensure administrative preparedness for any emergency situation.
Officials described the move as precautionary, aimed at strengthening readiness if conditions deteriorate.
