Govt Unveils Rs. 300 Million Livestock Project for Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Kashmir

A Rs. 300 million project has been planned to transform livestock fibre into high-value products in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, APP reported.

The three-year initiative, set to run from July 2026 to June 2029, will focus on value addition in wool, hair and mohair by building a structured value chain from raw material collection to finished goods. The project is expected to increase farmers’ incomes by 15 to 20 percent through improved processing, productivity and market access.

Under the plan, 35 raw material collection units will be established, along with cleaning, spinning and processing facilities across all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Neelum Valley. In addition, weaving and stitching centres will be set up to promote local craftsmanship and production of finished goods.

The project also includes the formation of the Yak Dwellers Association to strengthen institutional linkages, along with training programs for farmers and artisans to improve technical and business skills. Around 25,000 animals will undergo vaccination and deworming to enhance fibre quality.

Tourism-linked display and marketing centres will be developed to connect local products with buyers, while community ownership of facilities is expected to ensure long-term sustainability.
