Jet Fuel Rates Nearly Triple, Sending Flight Costs Skyward Across Pakistan

Jet fuel prices in Pakistan have nearly tripled, from Rs. 176 to Rs. 417 per liter, making air travel more expensive.

Airlines have increased fuel surcharges by $10 to $100 per ticket. While base fares remain the same, the added fuel surcharges have pushed total ticket prices skyward.

Domestic routes connecting Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore now see one-way fares reaching Rs. 40,000.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has imposed fuel surcharges of $10 on local flights, $100 for Canada routes, $75 for the UK, and $50 for Saudi Arabia and Gulf destinations. Private airlines have also added $15 to $150 in extra charges.

International economy class tickets to destinations like the Middle East, Toronto, Paris, and Manchester now range between Rs. 300,000 and Rs. 700,000. Airline employees blame soaring fuel costs and Gulf airspace restrictions for the extraordinary spikes in air fares.

Many commentators on X have warned that if fuel prices continue to rise, ticket fares could increase by another 100 percent.
