The Punjab government has taken strict action against staff at Lady Willingdon Hospital following a viral video showing a surgical procedure, terming it a serious violation of medical ethics and hospital protocols.
The video showed doctors performing what appeared to be C-sections on two patients in the same operating theatre, separated by a curtain, while a person filming could be heard suggesting that a “competition was underway.”
In response, the Punjab government suspended the medical superintendent and the head of the gynaecology department for “serious negligence in duties.”
Separate notifications issued by the Department of Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education stated that the suspensions were due to “inefficiency and misconduct,” and both officials were instructed to report to the department.
In addition, five postgraduate residents were suspended and authorities later terminated their Level-III training programs under Clause 13.2 of the Policy and Procedure Manual (PPM).
The department also informed the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), requesting further action for violations of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
The services of a woman medical officer were also repatriated to the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department due to “misconduct exhibited” in the viral video.
The department further issued notifications suspending two charge nurses and a hospital cook, directing them to report to the department.
Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique stated that violations of standard operating procedures in hospitals would not be tolerated and said such actions constituted a violation of medical ethics, an insult to patient dignity, and a breach of professional standards.
