Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said electricity consumption in Pakistan is witnessing a significant and gradual increase, describing it as a sign that the government’s energy policies are beginning to deliver results.
The minister shared this during a meeting with World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Bolormaa Amgaabazar, held in Islamabad on Wednesday.
Leghari said the government is working to make electricity tariffs more competitive so that key economic sectors, particularly industry, can benefit. He added that after assessing concessional tariffs for industries, the Power Division is now working on Time of Use proposals aimed at improving Pakistan’s energy competitiveness.
He said the proposed framework seeks to benefit from the country’s solar potential and offer concessional tariffs to industries, with consultations currently underway with all stakeholders.
The minister also said the government is considering major policy decisions to increase electricity generation through indigenous resources, adding that the current Middle East situation has further strengthened efforts to reduce dependence on imported energy.
The World Bank appreciated the Power Division’s reform agenda and reaffirmed its support in key areas including tariff rationalization, transmission and distribution upgrades, and renewable energy integration.
