The delay in the government’s promised petrol subsidy has left millions of motorcycle riders continuing to pay full fuel prices, adding to the financial pressure created by the recent sharp increase in petroleum rates.
Although the government had announced relief of Rs. 2,000 per month for up to 20 litres, effectively providing a Rs. 100 per litre subsidy, the support has yet to be implemented, leaving low-income riders without any immediate benefit.
Sources told ProPakistani that authorities have still not finalized the delivery mechanism for the subsidy. Officials are weighing whether the relief should be distributed through a mobile application or an SMS based verification system, but no final framework or timeline has been announced.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has so far remained silent on the progress of the application, while reports suggest testing is still underway and technical issues are being addressed.
One of the key conditions under review is that the motorcycle must be registered in the user’s own name to qualify, with verification likely to be linked to specific registration card details instead of standard registration copies.
The delay comes as fuel prices remain elevated following the recent government increase, under which petrol was raised to Rs. 458.40 per litre, further intensifying the burden on daily commuters and delivery riders.
