No More Surprise Taxes Before FY27 Budget: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday decided against introducing a mini-budget before the FY2026-27 federal budget.

Multiple revenue-raising proposals were presented to the prime minister in recent meetings. However, the premier issued clear instructions that no supplementary budget would be announced before June 2026.

Suggestions to introduce new taxes or increase existing rates were also turned down.

The prime minister directed all government departments to avoid placing further financial pressure on citizens already facing anxiety over record-breaking fuel prices and inflation.

He also declined a proposal to present the federal budget in late May. Instead, the government is now expected to unveil the budget in the first or second week of June.

Economic teams have been instructed to reassess spending priorities and revenue assumptions in light of the regional situation.
