Lahore Electric Tram Project Faces Delays

The proposed electric tram project along Lahore’s canal remains stalled despite earlier announcements and an initial trial run, with progress slowed by environmental concerns and financial constraints.

The government had planned to introduce the eco-friendly transport system along the canal corridor, covering key routes across the city. However, the project has yet to move beyond preliminary stages.

Opposition from environmental groups has emerged as a major hurdle, with the Lahore Bachao Committee preparing to seek a court stay order against the cutting of trees along the canal, arguing that the project could damage the city’s natural landscape.

At the same time, many residents have expressed support for the project, citing growing traffic congestion and inadequate public transport. Citizens said the tram service could ease commuting and provide a modern alternative for daily travel.

Officials said the project involves significant costs, including track construction, station development and procurement of electric trams, which are expected to be imported from abroad. Discussions have been held with China and some European countries, but progress has remained slow due to financial and technical challenges.

Environmental concerns remain central to the delay, as hundreds of mature trees along the canal may be affected. Civic groups have urged the government to review the plan and explore alternative routes that avoid damage to green cover.

Transport department officials said the project has not been shelved and is currently under review to address environmental and technical issues. They added that measures such as compensatory tree plantation are also being considered.

According to officials, the project requires a dedicated track and is planned to span around 27 kilometers with multiple stations, carrying more than 300 passengers. It is expected to be completed within a year after final approval.
