Pakistan Railways has announced a 50 percent discount on train fares for the spouses of working journalists, offering financial relief to the media community.
According to an official notification approved by the railway’s senior management, eligible journalists’ wives can avail the concession on up to 10 single journeys across all trains and classes.
However, the discount will not apply to premium services such as the Green Line, Pak Business Express, and Shah Hussain Express.
Officials said applicants must present required documentation to benefit from the scheme, which aims to ease travel costs for journalists’ families.
The announcement comes as part of broader relief measures following rising fuel prices. The government has decided not to increase train fares, despite a surge in global petroleum costs.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to maintain current fares across all classes, preventing a proposed increase of up to 30 percent.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the move aims to keep travel affordable and accessible during economic challenges caused by the global energy crisis.
The initiative reflects the government’s efforts to support citizens and provide cost-effective transport options amid rising fuel prices
