Punjab to Offer Subsidy for New Vehicles

The Government of Punjab has intensified efforts to eliminate polluting vehicles and accelerate progress on a vehicle buyback program aimed at reducing emissions.

Officials said the government will offer a subsidy for purchasing new vehicles once old vehicles are retired under the scheme. Work is also underway to develop a legal framework under the DLI-8 program.

World Bank-backed initiative

Sources revealed that the project will be financed through a loan exceeding $4 million, with the Transport and Mass Transit Department of Punjab responsible for implementation.

The program is expected to launch later this year following approval from the World Bank.

Timeline and objectives

An initial feasibility study for the project will be completed within six months, paving the way for implementation.

The initiative aims to reduce air pollution, promote cleaner transport, and improve environmental conditions across Punjab by phasing out outdated and high-emission vehicles.
