The start of US President Donald Trump’s military blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports has now begun, according to the deadline he set earlier.
Trump has sharply escalated tensions with Iran and warned that any Iranian vessel approaching the US blockade would be “eliminated.”
The US military has initiated operations aimed at controlling shipping routes linked to Iran in an attempt to block Iran via sea. Trump thinks this will help force concessions on Iran’s nuclear program and regional policies.
Iran has so far reacted strongly and warned that any obstacles against its vessel movement in international waters violate international law and amount to piracy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that recent negotiations with US representatives held in Pakistan collapsed. He blamed Washington’s “maximalist demands,” constantly changing conditions, and the imposition of the naval blockade during diplomatic efforts.
Meanwhile, regional tensions continue to intensify beyond the Gulf. Israeli forces launched airstrikes in southern Lebanon. Israeli troops have reportedly taken control of all access routes into Bint Jbeil as clashes with Hezbollah fighters persist.
