Geely’s New Hybrid System Uses 2.22 Litres of Petrol per 100km

Geely Auto on Monday unveiled its new i-HEV Intelligent Hybrid system, aiming to compete with established Japanese automakers in the conventional hybrid vehicle segment.

According to the company, the system integrates an AI-based energy management platform that analyzes real-time environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and altitude to improve fuel efficiency.

Geely said a vehicle equipped with the system recorded fuel consumption of 2.22 litres per 100 kilometres during a highway test, which it claims set a new Guinness World Record. The company added that the system is built on its vehicle architecture and includes onboard computing capability to support intelligent features such as smart driving.

The i-HEV system is expected to be introduced this year in several Geely models, including Preface, Monjaro, Starray and Emgrand.

Yale Zhang, managing director at Automotive Foresight in Shanghai, said the development marks a significant shift in the hybrid vehicle market, describing it as a challenge to the dominance of Japanese automakers in the segment.

Japanese manufacturers have held a strong position in the global hybrid market since Toyota launched the Prius in 1997, particularly in regions with limited electric infrastructure.

While Japan has led in conventional hybrid technology, China has focused more on plug-in hybrid development, where electric motors play a primary role. Geely Group ranked ninth globally in 2025 with 4.11 million vehicles sold, compared to 11.3 million units sold by Toyota.
