Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced plans to establish new fire stations across the city to strengthen emergency response and improve the operational capacity of the Fire Brigade Department.
The new stations will be set up in District West, Keamari, Malir, and East.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by the mayor at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) headquarters. The meeting focused on reducing response times and improving preparedness to handle the increasing number of fire incidents in the city.
Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer briefed officials on ongoing upgrade work at several fire stations, including those in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Korangi, Bolton Market, and North Karachi.
Mayor Wahab directed that all upgrade and rehabilitation work be completed by May 30, stressing the urgency due to the rising number of fire emergencies.
He stated that as a megacity and the economic hub of Pakistan, Karachi requires a strong and modern firefighting system. He emphasized the need for significant investment in infrastructure and services to protect lives and property.
The municipal commissioner also reported that the procurement process for essential firefighting and urban rescue equipment has been completed. Work orders worth Rs. 292 million have been issued, including pending items from earlier procurements.
The equipment includes hydraulic rescue tools, industrial fans, generators, water bowsers, rehabilitation of snorkels, protective gloves, safety masks, mobile lighting towers, and other modern firefighting tools.
In addition, the mayor ordered the immediate repair and activation of 17 non-functional fire vehicles. He instructed relevant departments to ensure that all vehicles are restored and deployed as soon as possible to improve emergency response capabilities.
