WhatsApp is developing a new feature for Android that will allow users to monitor the activity of their linked devices in real time. The feature is currently under development and is not yet available for beta testing.
Linked Device Security
WhatsApp has continued to expand features for linked devices, making it easier to use the service across multiple platforms. However, this added flexibility has increased the need for better account monitoring and security.
In a previous update, the app introduced chat lock support for linked devices, allowing users to secure conversations with a passcode directly on companion devices. This extended a feature that was previously limited to the primary device.
Real-Time Activity Monitoring
The upcoming feature will allow users to see when their linked devices are active. Currently, users can only check connected devices by opening the Linked Devices section, where they can review sessions and remove unknown devices.
With the new update, WhatsApp aims to simplify this process by providing visibility into device activity without requiring manual checks.
Security Alerts for Simultaneous Usage
WhatsApp is also developing a notification system that will alert users when another linked device is active at the same time as their primary device. This feature will help users quickly identify if their account is being accessed elsewhere.
The notification will appear only when both the main device and a linked device are active simultaneously. It will not trigger when a linked device is used independently, as that may simply reflect normal usage.
Users will be able to enable this option through advanced privacy settings.
Detecting Unauthorized Access
The feature is designed to help users identify suspicious activity. For example, if a user leaves a session open on WhatsApp Web and later receives an alert while using their phone, it could indicate that someone else is interacting with the account.
This real-time visibility will make it easier to review active sessions and take immediate action if needed.
Rollout Timeline
The linked device activity monitoring feature is still being refined. WhatsApp plans to release it in a future update, initially rolling it out to a limited group of users after testing is complete.
