Punjab Proposes Major Changes to Summer and Winter Vacations

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has proposed changes to the academic calendar aimed at improving educational standards and ensuring timely completion of the syllabus.

The proposals focus on increasing the number of teaching days in the academic year to between 180 and 190 to address reduced classroom time.

Officials said excessive holidays limit effective teaching time, and the proposals include reducing summer vacations by 15 to 20 days and winter holidays by 5 to 6 days.

The plan also includes opening schools on alternate Saturdays to maintain continuity in the academic schedule. Separate academic calendars for matriculation and O and A Level students are part of the proposals to align studies with international examination timelines.

The move comes after prolonged school closures in March 2026 due to the Middle East situation and a fuel crisis, which disrupted academic activities.
