PM Shehbaz Demands Country to Urgently Shift From Petrol Engine Cars to EVs

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate ongoing efforts to promote electric vehicles across Pakistan, highlighting their role in reducing the country’s fuel import burden.

The directive came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress on nationwide EV adoption. Officials briefed the meeting on current initiatives aimed at expanding electric mobility across the country.

The prime minister emphasized that faster adoption of electric vehicles would not only lower fuel imports but also support environmental protection and strengthen energy security. He called for urgent implementation of existing policies to ensure visible progress.

He also stressed the need for transparency in subsidies being provided for electric motorcycles, particularly for low income groups. Authorities were instructed to speed up the rollout of these schemes to ensure wider access and timely benefits.

During the briefing, officials informed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four licenses have been granted for electric vehicle production. In addition, 123 applications have been received for the establishment of EV charging stations across the country.

The meeting was attended by key federal ministers and senior officials, reflecting the government’s intent to prioritize electric mobility as part of its broader economic and energy strategy.
