Former Pakistan Cricketer Clarifies Karachi Remarks Made During PSL 11

Former Pakistan cricketer Aamir Sohail has further explained his recent remarks about Karachi, providing additional context after comments made during a live broadcast of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11).

The former cricketer shared a detailed statement on X, explaining that his remarks were intended to distinguish between civic habits and cultural traditions. He emphasized that his purpose was not to undermine Karachi’s identity but to address broader social behaviors.

He acknowledged that his choice of words may have caused offense and indicated that he owes an apology to the people of Karachi, stating that the act of pichkari should not be considered part of the city’s culture.

He also highlighted his connection to the city and expressed appreciation for its cultural practices, noting that Karachi is one of his own cities and that he views its traditions positively.

“When speaking on cities and their cultures, Karachi is also one of my own. The culture of eating paan has fascinated me; it is in my DNA as well,” he said, adding that *pichkaari is part of folklore and tradition and should not be seen in a negative way.

The remarks were made during commentary in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings. During the broadcast, a video package featuring a split-screen comparison of Karachi and Lahore was shown.

In the clip, Sohail referenced issues such as gutka and paan spitting in Karachi while discussing civic habits. Although he stated that his remarks were not intended as criticism of the city or its people, many viewers interpreted them as generalizing Karachi’s identity.

The comments quickly drew criticism online, with some users calling them insensitive and reducing the city to a negative stereotype. Several social media users also urged that Sohail be removed from commentary duties in the PSL.

Sohail’s clarification appears to be an effort to address these concerns and explain the context of his remarks.
