OpenAI has introduced AI-generated pets to its Codex app, adding a new visual feature to its agentic coding tool.
New Overlay Feature
The update introduces optional animated companions that appear as a floating overlay within the app. These companions do not perform coding tasks. Instead, they show what Codex is currently working on, notify users when a task is completed, and indicate when input is required.
The feature also allows developers to view Codex’s active thread without switching away from their current open application.
Customization Options
Users can type “/pet” in the Codex app to summon or dismiss a companion. There are eight built-in pets available, and users can also create their own using AI with the “/hatch” command.
Early users have already shared various custom designs, including versions inspired by Microsoft Clippy.
Availability
The AI pets are available on both Windows and macOS versions of Codex.
For a limited time, OpenAI is offering 30 days of ChatGPT Pro to users who create selected companion designs.
