Two electric poles with solar lights installed on the orders of the Sindh government in Media Town, a housing society for journalists near Hawkes Bay, have been stolen, according to residents.
Residents said it was surprising that thieves were able to cut and remove the solar light poles from the area. Each stolen pole had two solar lights and was part of a broader initiative launched at the instructions of the Sindh chief minister to improve infrastructure in the locality.
Locals expressed concern over the incident, calling it alarming that entire poles could be removed despite being public utility installations.
According to residents, three out of the 10 poles installed during 2023–24 have been stolen so far. They added that police have neither recovered the stolen equipment nor effectively prevented such incidents.
Journalists living in the area have appealed to authorities, including the home minister and the Karachi Police chief, to take notice of the thefts and address the worsening law and order situation in the locality.
