Residents of Rawalpindi are facing another increase in daily food expenses after milk sellers raised prices of milk and yogurt across the city following the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices.
According to local market rates, milk prices have increased by Rs. 30 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs. 250 from Rs. 220 per litre. Yogurt prices have also increased by Rs. 40 per kilogram and are now being sold at Rs. 280 per kg compared to the previous rate of Rs. 240.
The price increase was jointly announced by the Gujjar Milk Sellers Union and the Fresh Milk Union. A representative of the unions said the cost of buffaloes, fodder, and animal feed had increased sharply over the past few years, making the latest increase unavoidable.
He claimed buffalo prices had risen from around Rs. 450,000 to Rs. 1.5 million during the last three years, while fodder and feed costs had increased by up to 700 percent.
The district administration stated that official prices for milk and yogurt remain fixed and warned of fines and legal action against sellers charging higher rates.
