Opening Date Confirmed for Lahore’s Famous Market

The restoration and modernization project of Lahore’s historic Ichhra Bazaar is nearing completion, with authorities expecting to finish the work by May 25 ahead of Eid.

According to the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), around 92 percent of the work has been completed on the Rs800 million “Revitalization of Ichhra Bazaar” project.

LDA Chief Engineer-1 Mazhar Hussain Khan said the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next 12 days. He described it as a unique urban renewal project envisioned by the Punjab chief minister.

The project aims to reduce congestion, improve shoppers’ mobility, modernize the market’s appearance, and address long-standing civic issues.

Funded by the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL) and executed by the LDA, the project began on December 1 last year with a six-month completion timeline.

The revamped area covers around 2,650 feet, including the main Ichhra Bazaar, portions of Ferozepur Road, Zaildar Road, and several connecting streets. The market consists of nearly 350 shops.

Officials said the project includes construction of a culturally inspired grand entrance, upgraded facades with modern vertical louvres, weather-resistant coatings, uniform shop shutters and signboards, decorative grills, road signage, and landscaping work. Existing washrooms have also been renovated.

To create a pedestrian-friendly environment, authorities have installed patterned cobblestones, concrete boulders, tactile tiles for visually impaired individuals, porcelain side pathways, and wheelchair ramps at selected locations.
