Apple is reportedly moving ahead with efforts to diversify its chip production beyond TSMC, with Intel emerging as a possible manufacturing partner.
Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo reported that Apple and Intel have started small-scale testing of lower-end and legacy Apple silicon chips using Intel’s 18A P process, according to multiple reports.
Intel Could Make Chips in the US
The chips are reportedly planned for some iPhone, iPad, and Mac models.
Kuo estimated that about 80% of the chips in the reported Intel order mix are meant for iPhone models. The chips would be designed by Apple and manufactured by Intel in the US.
The Intel 18A P process is being compared with the TSMC process used for Apple’s A18 Pro chip.

Production May Ramp Up From 2027
Kuo reportedly believes Apple and Intel will continue small-scale testing this year.
Production is expected to increase in 2027 and 2028 before capacity begins to decline in 2029. Apple is also reportedly evaluating Intel’s more advanced process nodes.
TSMC Still Remains Apple’s Main Supplier
Despite the reported Intel testing, TSMC is still expected to remain Apple’s main chip supplier.
Kuo estimated that TSMC will continue to supply about 90% of all Apple silicon chips, keeping its dominant role in Apple’s chip supply chain.
