Researchers in the United States have developed an experimental chewing gum designed to kill viruses in the mouth by trapping them before they can infect human cells.
The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, tested a gum infused with plant-based antiviral proteins. These include a modified form of ACE2, which acts as a decoy target for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), and a bean-derived protein called FRIL, which can bind to influenza and herpes viruses.
In laboratory tests, small amounts of the gum were shown to reduce viral loads in saliva samples by more than 95% for certain viruses. The mechanism works by “binding and neutralizing” virus particles in the mouth, potentially lowering transmission risk during close contact.
Researchers say the concept is designed for settings where respiratory viruses spread easily, such as hospitals, schools, and crowded public spaces. However, they emphasize that the technology is still experimental, and human clinical trials are needed before any real-world use can be confirmed.
If future trials are successful, the gum could become a simple supplementary tool to help reduce virus transmission. Currently, it is not a replacement for vaccines or medical treatments but could become one with advanced trials in the future.
