PTA Announces Blocking of WhatsApp Access on Unverified SIMs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an important advisory for WhatsApp users across Pakistan, warning that accounts linked to inactive, blocked, deactivated, or unregistered SIM cards may soon become inaccessible.

The authority stressed that mobile numbers now form a key part of a user’s digital identity and must remain active and properly verified to avoid service disruption.

Users whose WhatsApp accounts are connected to invalid or inactive SIM cards risk losing access to their accounts, chats, contacts, and other personal data.

PTA urged citizens to immediately verify whether the mobile number linked to their WhatsApp account is registered in their name and associated with an active SIM.

The telecom regulator further advised users to migrate their WhatsApp accounts to a verified SIM if their current number has become inactive or unregistered. Officials warned that failure to update account information in time may result in unexpected logouts and difficulties in restoring access.

PTA also instructed citizens to visit the nearest mobile franchise or customer service center if biometric verification or SIM re-verification is required. The authority noted that biometric verification remains essential for securing mobile communication services and preventing unauthorized use of digital identities.

In its public awareness message, PTA emphasized the importance of protecting digital identity and maintaining secure communication channels.

The authority encouraged users to stay updated through its official platforms and digital assistant service available on WhatsApp at 0315-0055055.

The campaign carries the slogan: “Protect Your WhatsApp. Protect Your Digital Identity.”
