Lahore Police Officers Booked Under Begging Laws for Demanding ‘Eidi’ From Citizens

Lahore police personnel accused of asking citizens for “Eidi” have been booked under provisions related to begging, officials said.

According to a police spokesperson, the action was taken under the department’s zero-tolerance policy against officials involved in conduct that damages the reputation of the police force.

The spokesperson said DIG Operations Faisal Kamran had already issued strict directions to field officers to avoid any illegal activity. However, complaints later emerged that some police personnel in Shahdara and Islampura were asking citizens for money in the name of Eidi.

Taking notice of the complaints, DIG Operations assigned an inquiry to SDPO Islampura. The inquiry found the complaint to be correct, after which cases were registered against the personnel concerned.

One case was registered at Shahdara Police Station under FIR No. 2548/26, while another was registered at Islampura Police Station under FIR No. 1186/26.

The spokesperson said the cases were registered under Section 155-C and the anti-beggary law.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said no leniency would be shown to anyone who damages the police department’s reputation by demanding money from citizens.

“Such beggars and those who misuse their authority have no place in the police force,” he said.

He added that strict legal and departmental action would continue against those who bring a bad name to the force.
