The interior Sindh city of Dadu hit 51.5°C on Thursday, setting a new high for the location and surpassing its previous decade-old heat record as a severe heatwave continued to batter southern Pakistan, according to 24News.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed that Dadu’s earlier peak of 51.4°C was recorded on May 18, 2016. Officials noted that Thursday’s reading was 4.5°C above the typical May average for the city.
Extreme heat also impacted other Sindh locations, with both Larkana and Jacobabad registering 50.5°C.
Over the past few weeks, Pakistan has faced intense weather conditions, prompting authorities to repeatedly issue heatwave advisories and urge the public to stay indoors during peak daytime hours.
