Malaysia Bans Social Media for Underage Users

Malaysia has started blocking users under the age of 16 from registering accounts on social media platforms as part of a wider effort to protect minors from harmful online content.

The move places Malaysia among a growing group of countries introducing tighter rules for children’s access to online platforms, as governments raise concerns over the impact of social media on young users’ health and safety.

Platforms Must Verify Ages

From Monday, major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, must verify users’ ages against government-issued records.

The requirement applies to licensed social media platforms in Malaysia and is aimed at ensuring that only users aged 16 and above can register accounts.

Fines for Non-Compliance

Platforms that fail to follow the rules may face fines of up to 10 million ringgit ($2.5 million).

The rule is not designed to stop children from using the internet or accessing technology. Instead, it is meant to place more responsibility on platforms, parents, and guardians to protect minors online.

Existing Users Get Six Months

Age checks for existing social media users will be rolled out over six months.

Existing users identified as being under 16 will be given one month to download or transfer their data, including photos and videos, before platforms apply restrictions or other account actions.

Malaysia Increases Scrutiny

Malaysia has increased oversight of social media companies after a sharp rise in harmful online content in recent years.

Authorities are also cracking down on content that deliberately tries to stir racial or religious tensions or criticises the monarchy.
