Heavy traffic was stopped at several points on the M-5 Motorway after severe winds and stormy weather caused high-transmission power lines to fall onto the road near Rahim Yar Khan, disrupting traffic and forcing authorities to restrict heavy vehicles.
According to Motorway Police officials, the incident occurred at Point 510, where high-voltage cables fell across both the northbound and southbound tracks, creating a serious safety risk for commuters.
As a precautionary measure, the Motorway Police stopped heavy transport vehicles and public service vehicles from entering the motorway between Rohri and Rahim Yar Khan. Northbound heavy and public service traffic from Rohri and Pano Aqil was also barred from entering the M-5.
Officials said traffic has been diverted to alternate routes to ensure passenger safety. Diversion points have been set up at Iqbalabad and Guddu to keep vehicles moving.
Passengers traveling from Punjab to Sindh can exit at Iqbalabad and use the National Highway N-5 via Rahim Yar Khan. Those traveling from Sindh to Punjab can use the N-5 from Rahim Yar Khan and then rejoin the M-5 Motorway.
The Motorway Police said work is underway to remove the fallen electricity lines and restore traffic on the affected section.
