Poland Moves to Ban Phones in Schools for Under 16s

Poland plans to ban children under 16 from using mobile phones in schools from September 1, as the government moves to address concerns over screen use, online platforms, and children’s safety.

The proposed bill would apply to children aged 7 to 15 and would ban phone use across school premises, including during breaks between classes. It would also give schools a legal basis to create phone deposits where devices can be stored during the school day.

Ban Covers Lessons and Breaks

Prime Minister Donald Tusk backed the measure, arguing that parents and teachers need stronger tools to reduce phone use in primary schools. He also warned that addiction to platforms, games, and other digital services can have serious consequences for children and the country.

Several other countries, including the Netherlands, South Korea, and Italy, have already restricted smartphones in schools because of concerns over concentration and student behaviour.

Pornography Age Checks

Poland also plans stricter age verification rules for websites offering pornography. A separate bill from the digital affairs minister would place new obligations on such websites to limit children’s access.

The age verification system cannot rely on simple age declarations, biometric data, or information about a user’s online activity. It must also follow privacy and personal data protection rules.

Social Media Restrictions

In February, Education Minister Barbara Nowacka also outlined plans to ban children under 15 from using social media, which could create tensions with major US technology companies.

Other governments have also banned or considered banning children’s access to social media, as concerns grow over the effect of online platforms on young users.

Technology companies argue that rules should focus on how children use devices rather than full bans. They point to parental controls and targeted restrictions as possible alternatives.

The companies also argue that smartphones can support learning, communication, and safety when used properly.
