The Punjab government has decided to add 2,000 electric buses to the province’s public transport fleet during the next fiscal year as part of a major push to modernize public transport.
According to proposals prepared by the Transport Department, the overall size of transport-related projects for the upcoming fiscal year has been recommended at more than Rs. 200 billion. The plan includes a major increase in electric buses across different cities of the province.
Several large-scale transport projects have also been placed among next year’s priorities. These include the Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train, the Murree glass train, and the upgradation of eight railway tracks.
The government is also planning to launch 50,000 electric bikes for students, along with 5,000 e-taxis for unemployed youth. These schemes are aimed at expanding access to cleaner mobility while also creating employment opportunities.
In Lahore, the proposed plan includes making the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system operational from Kalma Chowk to Istanbul Chowk. Similar public transport systems are also under consideration for Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
Officials said the initiatives are aimed at providing citizens with modern, faster, and environment-friendly travel options. The projects are also expected to reduce traffic pressure and improve the standard of public transport across Punjab.
