ChatGPT Wants to Become a Super App Before OpenAI Goes Public

OpenAI is preparing one of the biggest changes to ChatGPT since the chatbot launched in 2022, planning to turn it into a broader superapp that brings together coding tools, AI agents, and third-party services.

The updated experience is expected to roll out across ChatGPT’s website and mobile apps in the coming weeks. The redesign will give more attention to Codex, OpenAI’s coding product, while also introducing AI agents that can handle more complex, multi-step tasks.

Superapp Strategy

The planned redesign is part of a larger effort to make ChatGPT more than a chatbot.

OpenAI is aiming to combine different tools and services into one interface, allowing users to move between general AI assistance, coding, image generation, task automation, and partner apps more easily.

The company’s longer-term goal is even more ambitious. OpenAI eventually wants to reduce reliance on explicit prompts, betting that its models will become better at understanding what users want as they move through the app.

Desktop App Plans

The superapp strategy builds on earlier plans to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and OpenAI’s Atlas web browser into a unified desktop application.

That effort has been led by Chief of Applications Fidji Simo, with OpenAI President Greg Brockman also involved in the product overhaul and related organizational changes.

The goal is to reduce product fragmentation and create a more focused user experience across OpenAI’s apps and services.

IPO Plans

The ChatGPT overhaul comes as OpenAI moves closer to a possible public listing.

The company is preparing to file confidential IPO paperwork and is working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on the process.

A filing in the near future could allow OpenAI to go public as early as September, though the timing is not final.

Chief Executive Sam Altman has previously said the company will go public when it makes sense.

Codex and Agents Take Center Stage

The overhaul is designed to guide ChatGPT users toward coding, image generation, and agent-based workflows inside the app.

Partner services from companies such as Canva and Booking Holdings are also expected to be integrated into the redesigned experience, giving users more ways to complete tasks without leaving ChatGPT.

The changes come as OpenAI looks to increase revenue from enterprise customers, a segment that can provide higher margins than the consumer market.

Enterprise Push

The product changes are also linked to a broader internal restructuring at OpenAI.

The company is trying to strengthen its position with business customers and compete more directly with Anthropic, which has gained traction in enterprise and coding use cases.

ChatGPT has roughly 900 million weekly users, giving OpenAI a large base to direct toward new paid tools and business-focused features.
