iOS 27 was just announced at the WWDC 2026 Apple event. It brought evidence that Apple’s first foldable phone, tentatively called the “iPhone Ultra” in leaks, is very real. This is the first time we have seen it from the official source, as the iPhone Ultra foldable phone has only been seen in the rumor mill.
The evidence was spotted by Sam Henri Gold, who spotted the references inside the iOS 27 frameworks. The documentation reportedly includes terms such as “foldState” and “angleDegrees,” along with language related to the total number of built-in displays on the host device.
These references suggest that iOS 27 may be preparing for hardware with a folding screen or more than one display, rather than a traditional single-screen iPhone.
iOS 27 Findings
9to5Mac confirmed that the references exist in iOS 27 and were not present in iOS 26.
The discovery does not confirm a launch by itself, but it points to Apple doing software-level work that could support a foldable device.
Apple has been linked to a foldable iPhone for some time, even though it has not publicly confirmed the project. The report also points to last year’s experimental iPhone Air as one of the earlier signs that Apple has been exploring different iPhone designs.

App Resizing Support
Apple also raised interest during its developer State of the Union.
The company said it is adding support for resizing iPhone apps in macOS mirroring and on iPad. That feature is useful for Mac and iPad users, but it could also help prepare iPhone apps for a device with a different screen shape.
A foldable iPhone would likely need flexible app layouts, especially if users move between folded and unfolded modes.
Hard to Hide
Apple has not discussed a foldable iPhone publicly, but the report notes that this type of preparation would be difficult to hide once developers get access to a new operating system.
Foldable phones are already available from other companies, and developers receive detailed access to new Apple software during beta testing. That makes it harder to disguise framework changes linked to a new device category.
Possible Launch Timing
The report says Apple’s foldable iPhone could be announced this fall, which would mean the device may run iOS 27 if it launches in that window.
However, Apple has not confirmed the device, its design, or its release timing.
For now, the iOS 27 beta only shows that Apple appears to be adding software support that could fit a foldable iPhone. The final product remains unannounced.
