In a significant relief for consumers, students, and the renewable energy sector, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reportedly agreed to withdraw proposed tax increases on solar panels and stationery items following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s intervention, according to sources.
The development is being viewed as a major success for the government’s efforts to protect public interests while finalising the upcoming federal budget for 2026-27.
Sources told ProPakistani that the IMF has accepted the government’s request not to impose the proposed 18 percent sales tax on stationery items in the upcoming federal budget, providing relief to students, educational institutions, and households.
Similarly, the proposal to raise the sales tax on solar panels from 10 percent to 18 percent has also been dropped after discussions between the government and the IMF. The decision is expected to support Pakistan’s growing renewable energy sector and encourage the continued adoption of solar energy solutions.
Sources said that taxation on the stock market is likely to remain unchanged in Budget 2026-27.
