Punjab to Hand Over 150 Govt Colleges to Private Sector

The Punjab government has decided to expand its public-private partnership model by including government colleges in its privatization program alongside schools.

In the first phase, 150 public colleges will be handed over to the private sector during the summer vacations under the public-private partnership model. The government has also decided to phase out commerce colleges across the province.

As part of the policy, the Higher Education Department Punjab has approved the establishment of “Colleges of Eminence” in all tehsils. Under this initiative, one model college in each tehsil will be upgraded according to international standards.

The department has also developed benchmarks to select colleges on the basis of performance and quality. These include 10 mandatory criteria: academic reputation, highly qualified faculty, student performance, research and innovation, modern infrastructure, laboratories, library facilities, industry linkages, and internship opportunities.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at bringing government colleges in line with modern educational requirements and improving academic standards across Punjab.
