Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Friday inaugurated the second phase of the restored Empress Market, a project aimed at preserving Karachi’s architectural heritage and historic character.
The inauguration ceremony, organized by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), was attended by government officials, business representatives and members of the public.
Accompanied by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the chief minister said the project represents the restoration of an important part of Karachi’s heritage and identity.
The rehabilitation work includes the restoration of all sections of the market, improvements to pedestrian areas and parking facilities, conservation of heritage architecture and the revival of the market’s iconic clock tower, which has resumed operation after 25 years.
Murad said several other heritage markets and historic buildings are also undergoing rehabilitation and will be restored in the coming period. In a statement, the KMC said the restored Empress Market is expected to attract both local and international visitors while serving as a destination that combines commerce, culture and history.
