The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a major road infrastructure project in Islamabad, with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday performing the groundbreaking of a new dual carriageway along the Islamabad Expressway.
The project involves the construction of a nine-kilometer dual carriageway, comprising three lanes on each side, in place of the existing service road. The road will run from Faizabad to the Gulberg Greens stop and is estimated to cost Rs. 7.4 billion.
According to officials, the project will be executed through a government-to-government arrangement under relevant public procurement rules. Earlier, the CDA had initiated a competitive bidding process and received technical bids from 11 private companies before opting for the alternative execution model.
Officials said the final project cost will be determined after completion of the procurement process. Work is expected to begin in the coming days once the necessary formalities are completed. During the groundbreaking ceremony, the interior minister directed the CDA to complete the project within 90 days.
Authorities are also expected to begin clearing the right of way for the project. Officials said the road alignment includes hundreds of structures and encroachments, while the relocation of utility infrastructure will also be required before construction can proceed.
