England were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L clash at Boston Stadium, despite dominating the game from start to finish.
Thomas Tuchel’s side controlled 78.8% possession and registered 19 shots, but only three of them were on target. Ghana, meanwhile, managed just two attempts as they spent most of the match defending deep.
According to Reuters, England’s 78.8% possession was the highest recorded by any team in a World Cup match without scoring a goal, based on records dating back to 1966.
The result also continued an unwanted pattern for England, who have now drawn their second group game in three consecutive major tournaments.
England struggled to break down Ghana’s compact defensive setup, with clear chances proving difficult to convert. Harry Kane came close in the second half when he fired a low left-footed effort from outside the box, but Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made a comfortable save.
Ghana’s biggest moment came in the 79th minute when Prince Adu burst forward and went past Marc Guehi before Ezri Konsa recovered well to block his shot. The move briefly caused concern for England, with suggestions of a possible penalty, but the danger was eventually cleared.
Bukayo Saka also came close after coming off the bench, forcing Asare into a fine save in the 86th minute. The Arsenal winger cut in from the right and aimed for the far corner, but the Ghana goalkeeper was equal to it.
England’s best late chance came moments later when Nico O’Reilly rose highest to meet a cross and headed the ball against the crossbar. The rebound fell kindly to Kane, but the England captain fired his volley well over the bar from close range.
The draw came after England had started their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia, where Kane scored twice.
England remain top of Group L with four points, while Ghana sit second on the same tally. Croatia are third, with Panama bottom of the group.
