Ronaldo Silences Critics With Record-Breaking World Cup Performance

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a strong response to his critics as Portugal defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in their World Cup match at Houston Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The 41-year-old forward scored twice and became the first player in history to score in six different World Cup tournaments. His first goal came in the sixth minute when he reacted quickly to a loose ball and finished from close range.

Ronaldo added his second goal before half-time with a smart finish. The brace took his World Cup goal tally to 10, allowing him to surpass Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time top scorer in the competition.

The performance came after Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo, where Ronaldo struggled to make an impact. In that match, he had the fewest touches of any Portugal player who played more than 45 minutes. His display led to fresh criticism and calls for him to be dropped from the starting lineup.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, however, stood by his captain. After the DR Congo match, Martinez said substituting Ronaldo made no sense “not when you need goals.”

Ronaldo repaid that faith with a match-winning display against Uzbekistan.

“I can say it was a very tough week, a difficult week, a week in which public opinion was very harsh on us, on all the players, especially on the coach,” Ronaldo said after the match.

“But well, it was a good response from me and my teammates, which is what we wanted.”

He added: “I always arrive, even if it’s later, but I’m there.”

Martinez praised Ronaldo’s mentality after the win.

“I’ve never worked with a player that has got that capacity — that whatever happens today, tomorrow is going to be the hungriest player to improve,” he said.

Ronaldo’s performance continued a record-breaking theme at this World Cup. Lionel Messi has broken Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record, Kylian Mbappe has drawn level with Klose at 16 goals, and Erling Haaland has helped Norway reach the knockout stage for the first time.

Ronaldo has spent more than two decades at the top level of football and remains one of the sport’s most discussed players. His latest performance once again added to the long-running debate around his place among football’s greatest players.

After scoring his first goal against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo looked into a television camera and shouted: “I’m back. I’m back.”

The World Cup remains the only major trophy missing from Ronaldo’s career. Whether Portugal go on to win it or not, his performance against Uzbekistan showed that he still remains a major figure on the biggest stage.
