Punjab Govt Transforms One of the Deadliest Highways Connecting Key Districts

The Punjab government has completed the Multan-Vehari Highway project, transforming a dangerous route once widely known as “Qatil Road” into a major transport link for South Punjab.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced the completion of the project on social media. He said the government finished the highway in record time under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s road development programme.

The project covers around 90 kilometres and passes through Multan, Khanewal and Vehari districts. The upgraded route is expected to improve connectivity between several cities and towns across the region.

The road previously gained a poor reputation because of its damaged condition and frequent accidents. Travellers regularly faced potholes, dust, congestion and long journey times.

However, the government has now upgraded and dualised the route to provide safer and smoother travel.

Major Transport Link for South Punjab

The Multan-Vehari Road serves thousands of vehicles every day. Farmers, traders, students, transporters and other commuters rely on the route for regular travel.

Officials believe the upgraded highway will reduce travel difficulties and improve the movement of agricultural produce and commercial goods.

The project will also strengthen connections among Multan, Vehari and Khanewal. As a result, businesses across South Punjab could benefit from faster and more reliable transport.

During an inspection earlier in June, officials said nearly 80% of the work had been completed and set June 30 as the deadline. The latest announcement indicates that the project has now reached completion before the end-of-month target.

The government has not yet announced a formal opening ceremony. However, the completion marks a major improvement for motorists who have waited years for the rehabilitation of the route.
