There are certain players whose impact goes far beyond statistics. They inspire future generations through their performances, leadership, and attitude. From Imran Khan to Virat Kohli, cricket has witnessed personalities who have transformed the game.
But there was one man who changed the very identity of English cricket Benjamin Andrew Stokes.
Born in New Zealand, Ben Stokes’ first lasting memory for me came during the 2013–14 Ashes. On a difficult Perth pitch against Australia, he scored a magnificent century under immense pressure. It was the moment the cricketing world realized that after Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff, England had found another genuine match-winning all-rounder capable of transforming their team.
His journey, however, was anything but not smooth
The 2016 T20 World Cup final became one of the darkest moments of his career. Few could have imagined that Ben Stokes would concede 24 runs in the final over as England lost the title to the West Indies. The following year, disciplinary issues kept him in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, raising questions about his future.
But great players always find a way to respond.
The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup was where Ben Stokes truly defined his legacy. Playing at home, England ended decades of heartbreak by winning their first-ever 50-over World Cup. Who can forget his stunning catch against South Africa at the cow corner boundary. More importantly, who can forget his unforgettable performance in the World Cup final against New Zealand, where he carried England through one of the greatest matches in cricket history.
Just weeks later came another masterpiece.
At Headingley in the 2019 Ashes, Stokes produced one of the greatest Test innings ever played, single-handedly guiding England to an impossible victory against Australia and etching his name into cricket folklore forever.
In 2022, the England and Wales Cricket Board appointed Ben Stokes as England’s Test captain. Alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, he introduced an aggressive philosophy that would soon become known as “BazBall.”
BazBall completely changed the way England approached Test cricket. Draws were no longer considered acceptable. England began chasing victories in every situation, regardless of the risks involved. More importantly, it changed how people watched and understood Test cricket. That fearless mindset became the hallmark of Stokes’ captaincy.
Later that year, in the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, Stokes once again delivered when it mattered most. His unbeaten 52 guided England to another world title, despite surviving a sensational spell from Naseem Shah.
Although England did not achieve every result expected during his tenure as captain, Ben Stokes gave English cricket something even more valuable a new direction. He redefined the team’s mentality and encouraged an aggressive, fearless brand of cricket that inspired players around the world.
During England’s 2026 Test series against New Zealand, another controversy surrounded Stokes, something that had often followed him throughout his career. Reports suggested he was disappointed with the attitude of the ECB and managing director Rob Key. Then, on 28 June 2026, Benjamin Andrew Stokes announced his retirement from cricket. He had already retired from One-Day Internationals following the 2023 World Cup.
What truly made Ben Stokes special was not just his ability, but his courage, self-belief, versatility, and the aura he carried every time he walked onto the field. He was the kind of cricketer who thrived under pressure. Whenever England found themselves in trouble—whether in a Test match, One-Day International, or T20—Stokes was the first to step forward and take responsibility.
That has been the story of his career. Time and again, he produced performances when England needed them the most, whether with the bat, the ball, or in the field.
One of the finest examples came during England’s 2025 Test series against India. With the match slipping away and wickets desperately needed, Stokes pushed his body to the limit. He bowled an extraordinary spell of 11 consecutive overs almost an entire session refusing to hand the ball to anyone else. His relentless intensity and determination broke India’s resistance and inspired England to a memorable victory. It was the perfect illustration of his leadership: never asking his teammates to do something he wasn’t willing to do himself.
That was Ben Stokes. A cricketer who never accepted defeat, never hid from responsibility, and always believed there was a way back. Those qualities, more than any statistic, are what made him one of the defining cricketers of his generation.
For England, his retirement comes at a difficult time, with questions surrounding the team’s future leadership. Replacing a cricketer like Ben Stokes will not be easy not because of his statistics alone, but because of the belief, courage, and identity he brought to English cricket.
As cricket bids farewell to one of its greatest competitors, one thing remains certain Ben Stokes changed English cricket forever.
Go well, Stokes.
