Karachi to Evacuate 584 Dangerous Buildings Ahead of Monsoon Rains

The Karachi administration has ordered the immediate evacuation of buildings classified as “highly dangerous” to protect residents from potential collapses during the upcoming monsoon season.

The decision followed a briefing by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi.

The SBCA has identified 584 dangerous structures across the city, with 59 buildings, including 29 heritage sites, categorized as highly dangerous and requiring urgent intervention.

District South remains the most vulnerable area, housing 442 of the identified unsafe structures. Other affected regions include District Central with 73 buildings, Keamari with 28, Korangi with 18, and District East with 16.

The administration has directed the SBCA to issue immediate evacuation notices and display public warnings at these sites.

Commissioner Naqvi emphasized that unsafe buildings will be demolished based on their structural condition. If residents refuse to vacate, the government plans to disconnect gas, electricity, and water supplies with the assistance of utility providers to ensure compliance.

The crackdown aims to prevent loss of life and property, a recurring issue in the city during heavy monsoon downpours.
