Norway knocked five-time champions Brazil out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a 2-1 win in their Round of 16 clash at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.
Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most, scoring twice late in the game to send Norway into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
For Brazil, the defeat marked their earliest exit from the tournament since 1990, when they were also eliminated in the Round of 16.
Brazil had a golden chance to take control early in the match after Matheus Cunha was brought down by Kristoffer Ajer inside the box in the 14th minute. Bruno Guimaraes stepped up for the penalty, but Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland guessed right and palmed away his effort at a comfortable height.
Nyland remained important throughout the match and finished with four saves, including the crucial penalty stop that kept Norway level.
After a goalless first half, Norway finally broke through in the 79th minute. Andreas Schjelderup delivered a superb cross into the box, and Haaland rose to power a brilliant header into the bottom corner.
The Manchester City striker then sealed the win in the 90th minute with a stunning second goal. Receiving the ball outside the box, Haaland took one touch before hammering a low finish across Alisson and into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
The brace took Haaland to seven goals at the World Cup 2026, putting him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the scoring charts.
Neymar Jr., who came on as a substitute, pulled one back for Brazil from the penalty spot in the 90+10th minute, but it was too late to stop Norway from completing a famous win.
Norway will now face the winner of Sunday’s later match between Mexico and England in the quarter-finals in Miami Gardens.
