Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced sold two million copies on its first day of release.
The remake launched on July 9, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is also available through Ubisoft+.
Strong Launch
Ubisoft said Black Flag Resynced became the most-watched game on Twitch on its release date.
It also attracted 99,451 simultaneous Steam players during its first 24 hours, setting a new launch record for an Assassin’s Creed game on the platform.
The number continued to rise after launch. SteamDB recorded an all-time peak of 104,756 concurrent players on July 12, the highest figure achieved by any game in the series on Steam.
Positive Reception
The game currently holds an average score of 85 on OpenCritic, with 93% of listed critics recommending it.
It also has a Metacritic score of 84 based on 86 PlayStation 5 reviews. Ubisoft described it as the highest-rated Assassin’s Creed release since the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
Wccftech gave the remake an 8.6 out of 10. Its review praised the visual and gameplay improvements, although it noted that some content from the original game was missing.
Player Reviews Also Positive
The game held an average rating of 4.79 out of five on the PlayStation Store, while Ubisoft reported a rating of 4.7 out of five on the Xbox Store shortly after launch.
Steam categorises its user reviews as “Mostly Positive.” However, the percentage has changed as more reviews have appeared. SteamDB currently shows around 74% of reviews as positive, compared with the 78% reported earlier.
Martin Schelling, head of the Assassin’s Creed brand, said the original Black Flag had remained important to both Ubisoft and the game’s community. He added that the number of players joining on the first day and the positive reviews were the response the company had hoped to receive.
Rebuilt Pirate Adventure
Ubisoft Singapore led the development of Black Flag Resynced, rebuilding the 2013 game with the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine.
The remake includes updated graphics, revised combat, improved stealth and parkour, expanded naval mechanics, and additional story content.
Players once again control Edward Kenway as he travels through the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy and becomes involved in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars.
Barcelona Studio Faces Job Cuts
The successful launch comes as employees at Ubisoft Barcelona challenge a restructuring plan that could eliminate 51 positions.
The job cuts were proposed before the game’s release rather than announced in response to its commercial performance. Workers began strike action on June 30 and demanded an agreement that would protect the affected positions.
Ubisoft Barcelona is expected to remain open but could be reorganised to focus entirely on the Rainbow Six series.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe Could Arrive Next
Ubisoft’s next major series entry, currently known as Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, is reportedly targeting 2027.
Unconfirmed leaks claim the game will feature a protagonist named Anika who is connected to the Auditore family through Claudia Auditore, Ezio’s sister.
The reports also suggest that an older Ezio Auditore could appear as a mentor. However, it remains unclear whether he would appear physically, through flashbacks, or through technology connected to the series’ wider story. Ubisoft has not confirmed these details.
