The Lahore High Court (LHC) has observed that the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) does not appear to have the legal authority to seal grocery stores, even if adulterated food items are found during inspections.
The observations came during the hearing of a petition filed by Abdul Hafeez, who challenged the sealing of his general store in Sheikhupura by the Punjab Food Authority.
During the proceedings, Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad noted that while the PFA can initiate legal proceedings against violators under the relevant laws, it cannot seal a grocery store.
The court remarked that, at first glance, the authority appeared to have acted beyond the powers granted to it.
The judge also warned that the shop should be de-sealed, stating that the court would pass an appropriate order if the action was not reversed.
Counsel for the petitioner argued that the store had been sealed without prior notice and without providing any reasons, making the action unlawful.
After hearing the initial arguments, the Lahore High Court reserved its verdict on the petition.
