Apple Intelligence has received approval for use in China after a long delay.
The service has been registered with China’s cyberspace regulator, which is a required step before generative AI products can be offered in the country. Apple has not announced when the service will actually launch for users in China.
Apple Intelligence launched in other markets earlier, but users in China have not had access to it so far.
That is now set to change after Chinese authorities gave the service the green light. The approval means Apple can legally offer its AI features in China, although the final rollout date still depends on Apple.
Apple Intelligence in China will reportedly use AI capabilities from local Chinese companies.
Alibaba confirmed that its Qwen model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS in China. Baidu also confirmed that it is working with Apple to develop Apple Intelligence features for Chinese iPhone users.
China requires AI products to go through regulatory approval before they become publicly available.
This requirement made local partnerships important for Apple. The company had to adjust its AI rollout for China by working with approved Chinese technology providers instead of relying only on the same AI setup used in other markets.
The approval is an important step, but it does not mean Apple Intelligence is immediately available in China.
The regulator’s statement did not include a launch date. Apple has also not confirmed when Chinese iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro users will get access to the service.
