France is preparing to permanently close its diplomatic mission in Karachi as part of a broader cost-cutting plan, French Consul General Alexis Chahtahtinsky has announced.
He shared the development while addressing Karachi residents and expatriates at a French National Day, or Bastille Day, event held at the Beach Luxury Hotel.
Chahtahtinsky said the decision was taken solely for budgetary reasons and forms part of the French government’s plan to reduce its diplomatic presence in Pakistan and other countries.
Despite the closure, he said France would continue strengthening its relationship with Pakistan, mainly through its embassy in Islamabad.
France will also maintain its presence in Karachi through three institutions.
The new Honorary Consul General will handle consular matters and remain in contact with provincial governments. The Pakistan France Business Alliance will continue promoting trade and business ties, while Alliance Française will continue supporting the French language and culture in Karachi.
Chahtahtinsky described Karachi as a “vibrant city” and said these institutions would continue playing an important role in maintaining France’s presence in the metropolis.
