Pakistan Joins Global AI Cooperation Body as Founding Member

Pakistan has joined a global initiative on artificial intelligence after Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar signed the agreement to establish the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation in Shanghai as a founding member.

Dar signed the pact during his two-day official visit to China and said Pakistan remains committed to strengthening international cooperation in artificial intelligence, especially from the perspective of the Global South.

He said Pakistan will work with member states to promote equal access to AI and help reduce the global AI divide.

Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja also travelled to China with the deputy prime minister and will attend the World AI Conference 2026 in Shanghai. She will take part in key technical talks and meet ministers and senior technology officials from several countries.

The signing ceremony for the new organisation, known as WAICO, was held in Shanghai on Thursday. Pakistan joined 28 other countries in signing the founding agreement.

Representatives from the United Nations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also attended the event along with delegates from various countries and international organisations.

Pakistan’s participation marks a notable step in its efforts to expand its role in global technology policy and artificial intelligence cooperation.
