The federal government has imposed a six-month ban on union activities across all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), generation companies (GENCOs), and the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) to maintain operational stability in the power sector during ongoing reforms and privatization initiatives.
The Ministry of Interior has issued orders restricting union-related activities in power supply companies under the Essential Services Act.
The ban will remain effective from July 26 and will apply to electricity distribution companies across the country.
Electricity distribution companies have historically faced challenges including high transmission and distribution losses, weak recovery rates, and operational inefficiencies.
The Essential Services Act allows the government to restrict certain labor activities in sectors considered critical for national interest and public welfare. Electricity supply is classified as an essential service due to its importance for households, industries, and the overall economy.
