Punjab Revises Postgraduate Medical Training Rules for 2027 Admissions

The Punjab Health Department has issued a new policy letter to improve the quality of medical institutions and strengthen postgraduate medical education across the province.

According to a department spokesperson, the provincial government has ensured equal opportunities for candidates from both the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, or CPSP, and medical universities in postgraduate training programs.

Under the new policy guidelines, which will take effect from the January 2027 admission session, postgraduate training for the second fellowship, formerly known as Level IV, under the Central Induction Program will be offered exclusively through university degree programs leading to MD and MS qualifications.

The spokesperson clarified that candidates holding FCPS qualifications will also remain fully eligible for second fellowship training.

To provide a level playing field, second fellowship MD/MS training seats available in government teaching hospitals under the administrative control of the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department will be divided equally between eligible candidates.

Half of the seats will be allocated to candidates holding university MD/MS degrees, while the remaining half will be allocated to candidates holding FCPS qualifications issued by CPSP.

The spokesperson added that graduates of Punjab’s medical institutions continue to earn recognition for Pakistan around the world through their professional skills and capabilities.

The Health Department said the new policy has been introduced to further improve the overall standards of postgraduate medical education while maintaining a fair, merit-based, and transparent system for specialist training in public-sector teaching hospitals across Punjab.
